General clinic
provides basic disease prevention and health monitoring (screening) services.
 | Immunizations
– for preschool and school-aged children are given free in accordance with
State law. Adults may also receive immunizations upon request during scheduled
hours. |
 | Tuberculosis Skin
Test – provides tuberculin skin tests yearly upon request. Chest X-rays are
given to positive skin test reactors and referrals from physicians. |
 | Blood Sugar Screening
– test blood sugar for decreased or elevated levels. Irregular blood sugar
levels are a risk factor for diabetes |
 | Hemoglobin
Screening– test to screen for iron
level in the blood. |
 | Blood Pressure
Screening – check blood pressure for elevated levels which increases the risk
of heart disease and stroke. |
Child Health Services provides
comprehensive screening and management of common problems and minor illnesses of
children up to age 21. Screening is provided to allow early detection of health-
related concerns. Immunizations and childcare education are provided for
prevention of health related problems.
 | Child Service Coordination – aims to help children with special needs
access services and assist in identifying preventive, specialized or other
support services. This program also ensures that children with special needs
have maximum opportunities to reach their developmental potential. |
 | Health Check/Health Choice – Provides children with regularly scheduled
health screenings known as "Health Check Visits," hospital visits,
dental care and vision/hearing screenings. The program aims to provide
coverage for the children of working families who can not afford to purchase
medical insurance. |
 | Orthopedic Clinic – offers one or two diagnostic visits to Scotland
County residents under the age of 21 who seems to have a health problem
affecting the bones, muscles, or physical growth. |
Health Promotion/Adult Health Program services
include physicals, pap smears, mammograms, blood pressure checks, cholesterol
screenings, blood sugar screening and much more.
 | Breast and Cervical Cancer Program – offers low-income women pap smears
and mammogram screenings. |
 | Wise Woman Program – offers women education and interventions to prevent
cardiovascular disease. |
Communicable Disease/STD/HIV aims to
prevent and eliminate communicable diseases in Scotland County. Screening exams
for communicable diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and HIV are initiated
in the health department.
Maternal Health Program is to ensure the
best possible pregnancy outcome for all pregnant women.
 | Maternity Clinic – provides maternal health care, prenatal, and
postpartum care to women in need of services. |
 | High Risk Maternity Clinic – provides maternal care to women who meet
specific medical criteria that identifies the pregnancy as high risk. |
 | Maternity Care Coordination – program that works with pregnant women and
their families to ensure social work services, education, and resources. |
 | Maternal Outreach Services – intensive program provides visits to the
mother and infant providing support, guidance, and education regarding all
phases of pregnancy. |
Woman’s Health provides education,
counseling, contraceptives, health care services, and referral where appropriate
to women desiring a pregnancy, child spacing, or limiting number of pregnancies.
 | Short Term Services – complete physical exam, testing for anemia,
instruction in breast self-exams, pap smears, STD screening, and referrals
to specialized care. |
WIC/Nutrition Services is a federally funded program
provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding guidance and
access to health care for low-income pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and
children at nutritional risk.
Environmental Health inspects and enforces
the statutory requirements developed for food, lodging, and institutional
establishments. Additional responsibilities include animal control, prevention
and control of rabies, inadequate/improper sewage disposal control and chemical
waste, and water testing.
Health Education is provided as a
component of every program offered by the Health Department. Health educators,
nurses, nutritionist, sanitarians, and others provide this education aimed at
disease prevention, healthful lifestyle promotion, and environmental health
compliance to patients, school, and community groups.
Scotland County Healthy Carolinians is
a program aimed at improving health and safety in our community beyond the year
2000. The Healthy Carolinians Task Force is a team of community members,
leaders, and organizations working together to improve health and safety.
